Creative Echo

大学院の建築設計スタジオにて、スペイン・カナリア諸島の一つ、ランサローテ島アレシフェ郊外を対象に、「観光客と地元住民が共生する場の提案」が課題として与えられた。表面的には従来型の設計課題である一方、本スタジオにはもう一つの裏テーマが存在していた。それは、当時急速に発展していた生成AIを、建築設計のプロセスにいかに統合できるかを実験的に探求することだった。

私はこの文脈において、「生成AIは学習データのしがらみから自由になることはできず、真にオリジナルな創造には限界がある」という本質的な制約に着目。これを乗り越え、クリエイターの意図と個性を反映した創造性を実現する設計フローとして、《Creative Echo》という手法を提案した。

Creative Echoは、クリエイターとAIが相互にインスピレーションを“反響（エコー）”し合うプロセスである。具体的には、クリエイターがラフスケッチをAIに入力し、AIがそれをもとにデザインを生成。クリエイターはその生成物の中から最も自らの嗜好に近いものを選び、次にその選択結果と、精度を高めた新たなスケッチをAIに渡す。これを繰り返すことで、AIが次第にクリエイターの指向性を学習し、共同作業としてのデザインが深化していく。

最終提案では、このCreative Echoを通して導き出された空間概念をもとに、世界中から訪れたアーティストたちが自然豊かなランサローテ島で創作活動に取り組み、その活動から地元住民が刺激と着想を得る——という双方向的なインスピレーションの循環を体現する施設を提案した。これは、AIを活用しながらも、創造性の主導権を人間に取り戻す、新たな建築デザインプロセスの可能性を示す実験でもあった。

As part of a graduate-level architecture design studio, I was assigned a project to propose a space that fosters coexistence between tourists and local residents on the outskirts of Arrecife, located on Lanzarote Island—one of Spain’s Canary Islands. While the brief appeared to be a conventional design challenge on the surface, the studio carried an implicit theme: to experimentally explore how generative AI, which was rapidly advancing at the time, could be integrated into the architectural design process.

In response to this context, I focused on a fundamental limitation of generative AI—its inability to break free from the constraints of its training data, making it difficult to produce truly original creations. To overcome this, I proposed a design methodology called Creative Echo, aimed at restoring human authorship and embedding individual creative intent into AI-assisted design workflows.

Creative Echo is a process in which the creator and the AI engage in an iterative “echo” of inspiration. The designer begins by inputting a rough sketch into the AI, which then generates multiple design proposals based on it. The designer selects the option that most closely aligns with their aesthetic preferences, refines their sketch accordingly, and feeds both the selection and the refined sketch back into the AI. Repeating this cycle allows the AI to gradually learn and reflect the creator’s sensibility, leading to a deepening co-creative design process.

The final architectural proposal, derived through the Creative Echo process, envisioned a facility where artists from around the world would create within the rich natural environment of Lanzarote. Their work would, in turn, inspire and engage local residents—forming a cycle of mutual inspiration. This project was not only a design proposal but also an experimental exploration into how AI can serve as a powerful tool while ensuring that creative agency remains firmly in human hands.
